Objectives

On completion of a major sequence in English, students are expected to have developed:

The English program offers subjects in literature. The subjects in literature cover significant fields of English literary history and some important areas of writing in the language since the mid-nineteenth century. They aim at developing an understanding of the major literary forms, at teaching the skills of literary criticism, and at developing a capacity to analyse the cultural role of literature in modern societies.

The program caters for the needs of students who are developing careers in the areas of the social sciences, administration and education and who wish to pursue postgraduate study in literature. Subjects are also available as supporting studies for students in welfare, business, visual arts and applied science. They are recognised and supported by the Directorate of School Education for professional purposes.

To meet the requirements of the major in English, students should complete twelve points at first level, sixteen points at second level, twenty-four points at third. A minor in English should include either two subjects at first level and two subjects at second level, or two subjects at second level and two subjects at third level.
