Objectives At the completion of this subject students should have acquired a broad awareness of representative writing of Spanish America, an understanding of the literary movements of the period; and an appreciation of the kinds of society and cultures which have formed the Spanish American experience.
Synopsis This subject surveys the different forms of novels written in northern Spanish America in the second half of the twentieth century. The study starts with Hombres de maíz and El reino de este mundo, the two novels published in 1949 and generally accepted as the pioneer works within Magical Realism. Some lectures will focus on the discussion of Magical Realism as a pure (or not) literary and cultural manifestation of the peoples of Latin America. The last part of the subject will be dedicated to the study of contemporary post-modern works, and an attempt will be made to establish their relationship with the Latin American "Boom" that preceded them.
