Objectives Students in this subject can expext to develop an understanding of the social impact of technological change since the Industrial Revolution; the industrial and political issues associated with technological change; the impact of computer technology on society; and the relationship between technology and the environment.

Synopsis Technology and society: technology in historical perspective. Social theories of technological change. The inter-relation between technological development in different social contexts - Australia, Asia, Europe, USA. Contemporary developments in three key areas of change - microelectronics, robotics, communications. Technological change and work. Industrial issues. The role of government. Technology and leisure. Technology and the environment. Technology and the individual. Controlling the future. In order to enrol in this subject students will need to have regular access to a computer, modem and printer to access information on the internet.

Assessment One essay (3000 words): 50%
* One exercise (1000 words): 20%
* Project (2000 words): 30%
