Prerequisites: UKR1070
Objectives The language component of this subject builds upon the skills and knowledge gained in UKR1070. Upon completing the literature component of UKR1080, students should have obtained a knowledge of the major developments in Ukrainian literature in the nineteenth century, including the major features of Ukrainian and European Romanticism and Realism and a familiarity with key texts.
Synopsis (i) Language: a review of Ukrainian grammar; development of conversation and composition skills using texts on contemporary themes. (ii) Literature and society: an introduction to major cultural, social and political developments in Ukraine in the nineteenth century; the study of selected literary texts from Kotliarevs'kyi to Franko.
