Objectives This subject aims to promote an understanding by students of the main stages in the public policy process; an appreciation of, and an ability to evaluate, the major theories of incrementalism and rationalism used to understand the policy process and substantive policy areas; and an awareness of the extent to which political analysis can contribute to understanding and improving public policy.
Synopsis This subject explores the content of policy and the potentialities and limits of public policy. There will be a focus on policy case studies; `models' of the policy process; and problems of administrative and political effectiveness and accountability.
Assessment Essay (6000 words): 50%
