Objectives On successful completion of this subject students should have an appreciation of a range of theoretical and philosphical concepts with which to analyse and interpret substantive issues in Australian politics and culture; have an awareness of the ways in which political and cultural understandings evolve and are subject to challenge and revision; and understand the relation between politics and culture in a historical as well as a contemporary context.
Synopsis This subject considers the question of Australian political culture and its relation to the Australian polity by posing questions of identity: who we are; how we are formed; what has shaped us as Australians. Problematising Australian culture in this manner then provides an avenue to critically discuss contemporary events to reshape the Australian polity and to assess their impact as we move toward the year 2001.
