Objectives On successful completion of this subject students should have an appreciation of the problems facing Australia in its relations with its Asian neighbours; be aware of different Asian cultures, value systems and societal forces; be able to demonstrate knowledge of a wide range of empirical material; have developed research techniques and conceptual abilities.
Synopsis The subject surveys Australia's political and diplomatic relations with Asian countries and regional organisations. Special attention is paid to Australia's relations with its major trading partners and the prospects for future expansion. The contemporary security environment is discussed together with Australia's defence options and responses. The role of the arts, culture, education and tourism in building bridges with our Asian neighbours is analysed.
Assessment Two essays (2000 words each): 50%
