Objectives On completion of this subject, the student will be expected to have gained an understanding of the processes of researching police-related issues; methods of analysing and interpreting data of diverse types; research methodology, including identification of a topic, use of library and other resources and the consideration of legal and ethical issues; the process of oral and written presentation of research findings.
Synopsis Identifying a research area; legal and ethical issues in research; use of library and other resources of research purposes; presenting research proposals; research design, data analysis, and general methodological issues, evaluation skills in research. Each student will prepare, under staff supervision, a research paper upon an approved topic. Originality in the examination of data and the presentation of arguments is required. The aim of the subject is to acquaint students with the methodological issues and debates involved in social science research and to develop in students appropriate research and presentation skills.
Assessment Research report (6000 words): 80%
