Philosophy of science A

Objectives On completing this subject students should have an understanding of the nature of philosophical discourse, especially concerning the impact of scientific theory on our world view, and have acquired the conceptual foundations for further study in the subject. They should also have developed an enhanced competence in reading and writing rigorously argued prose.

Synopsis This subject comprises two components: (i) `Reason and rationality', an introduction to basic logical concepts and the techniques of logical appraisal, and (ii) `Science, religion and witchcraft', an introductory subject in the history and philosophy of science. All students must go to the department during orientation week to arrange tutorials.
