Objectives To develop in students an understanding of the nature of speech sound and to help them acquire a consistent reference framework for the study and optimal description of the sound system of particular languages.
Synopsis This subject comprises: (a) articulatory phonetics - an introduction to the principles of articulatory phonetics; the description and classification of speech sounds, and the International Phonetic Alphabet; (b) acoustic phonetics - an introduction to the acoustic analysis of speech sounds; the physical properties of speech sounds and their measurement, spectrographic and mingographic analysis; (c) phonology - an introduction to the principles of phonological analysis and issues in phonological theory; phonological processes, phonemic analysis, phonological naturalness, rules and redundancy.
Assessment second year Written assignments (2000 words): 40%
