Music and popular culture: Asia and Australia

Objectives Upon successful completion of the subject students should have a basic knowledge of musical, cultural and commercial issues and styles of popular music in Australia and Asia, a framework to identify, categorise and assess these popular music styles; and an understanding of how to write about the music through critical observation and analysis.

Synopsis Study of the relationships between popular music and society, culture and economic forces; and of popular musical genres in Australia and Asia, with special reference to India, Indonesia, Vietnam, China and Japan.

Assessment: Written (3000 words): 40%
* Examination (2 hours): 40%
* Listening tests: 20%
