Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject students should have a basic knowledge of the history, styles and contexts of the selected genres and a framework with which to identify, categorise, assess, and write about the styles.

Synopsis Study of the relationships between popular music and society, culture and economic forces, and of popular musical genres in Australia and Asia, with special reference to India, Indonesia, Vietnam, China and Japan.

Assessment Written (2500 words): 40%
* Examination (2 hours): 40%
* Exercises (1500 words): 20%
