New dances from old cultures

* Prerequisites for a minor or major in dance: MUS1050 and MUS1060

Objectives Upon completion of this subject students should have performed selected dances or dance techniques, and learned how to critically analyse and review these performance idioms.

Synopsis A comparative and critical study of concepts, ideologies and techniques used in contemporary Western and traditional Southeast and South Asian dance and choreography. Students are guided towards a critical analysis of these performance idioms and their application in original choreography created by each student.

Assessment Written (2000 words): 30%
* Practical assigments: 20%
* Examinations (Performance and explanation of student's 20 minute original choreographed work): 50%
