Objectives Upon successful completion of this subject students should have acquired a basic knowledge of Javanese gamelan and vocal music, dance and theatre terminology, concepts, performance techniques and history, and a framework in which to identify, categorise and assess selected styles.
Synopsis This introductory performance-based subject acquaints students with the basic theory and practice of Central Javanese gamelan (instrumental and vocal music), dance and shadow puppet theatre (wayang kulit) accompaniment. Also examined are interrelationships between these performing arts, history and cultural context, sociology of performance, and ethnomusicological performance theory.
