Solo and duo performance and literature

Objectives By the end of the semester, students undertaking this subject should have gained an introduction in the research-based performance of selected repertoire from a wide range of periods; completed the required body of technical work, including scales, arpeggios and studies as set out in the technical syllabus for the relevant instrument; completed further work in sight reading appropriate to the technical standard for first year; and acquired basic skills in pitch, rhythm and textural recognition.

Synopsis The subject covers the performance, performance practice, analysis and history of the student's chosen chief instrument repertoireand ear training. Under the guidance of a departmental supervisor and a studio teacher students (i) prepare for performance on the student's chief instrument a unified program of works from at least two historical periods accompanied by original program annotations, and (ii) complete a critical, analytical and historical assignment. Students are required to practice at least two hours per day.

Assessment Written (1000 words): 15%
* Aural training assignments and examination: 15%
* Practical performance examinations : 70%
