Objectives Students in this subject can expect to develop a critical appreciation of theories of `development', `underdevelopment' and `modernisation'; acquire an understanding of the extent to which `development' theorists write from the perspective of concepts and categories drawn from Western European experience of modernity; utilise these understandings in the examination of specific case studies in the Asia-Pacific region; acquire and demonstrate a capacity for independent and critical assessment of material presented to them by writing well organised and logically argued essays on topics provided and chosen.
Synopsis A discussion of cultural, economic and political change in non-Western countries with a focus on the Asia-Pacific region. A critical evaluation of the prevailing notion of modernity based on the experiences of the non-West.
