Objectives On completion of this subject students should be able to understand basic aspects of narrative and discursive structures in language and culture; work with the concept of ideology; show a developing understanding of the relations of texts to their contexts; recognise social and cultural difference and the socially located nature of reading; demonstrate how the analytical skills they have acquired can be related to broader theoretical frameworks; go on to further work in textual, linguistic, critical and semiotic studies within the centre and other departments.
Synopsis Continuing the work of CLS1010 this subject looks at the interactions between texts and their contexts - historical, social, linguistic, cultural, ideological, and personal. Using a wide range of examples we will consider the interactions between language and ideology, context and meaning. The key role of narrative in culture will be explored.
Assessment Essay (1500 words): 30%
