Prerequisites: No previous knowledge of Indonesian is assumed
Objectives Upon completion of this subject students should be able (in Indonesian) to complete basic transactions, pronounce names of people and places, follow the tutor's direction, assist an Indonesian visitor on campus, find and give information related to transportation, make an appointment, assist a guest with food items. In English students will be able to raise issues concerning Muslim belief and custom, the reporting of Indonesia in the media, variation in rural and urban life, borders of Southeast Asia, the political leadership of Southeast Asia.
Synopsis In this subject the primary focus is on basic communication skills required for use in an Indonesian or Australian setting. The lecture series covers a broad introduction to the culture and geography of Indonesia and Southeast Asia as well as an introduction to strategies and skills required in learning a language. Practicals deal with the introduction and application of basic communication tasks with an emphasis on numeracy skills and immediate needs. The tutorial is student directed and deals with problems or points of interest arising from the practicals and lectures
