Jewish civilisation

The Australian Centre for Jewish Civilisation, in the Faculty of Arts, is currently developing major sequences in Hebrew and Jewish studies.

In 1996 JWC1010/1020 (Hebrew language and literature I, parts A and B) was introduced. JWC2010/2020 (Modern Hebrew language and literature II, parts A and B) will be available in 1997 and it is expected that Hebrew language and literature III will be added in 1998.

JWC1030/1040 (Jewish civilisation I, parts A and B) will be offered as first-year subjects in 1997. Two first-year subjects offered by the Department of History - HSY1070 (Contemporary Europe: origins) and HSY1080 (Contemporary Europe: East and West) - allow for study of topics in Jewish history.

A number of Jewish studies subjects are offered at second and third-year levels.

At second or third-year level students may choose RLT2480/3480 (The religious quest: Judaism, Christianity and Islam) as an optional subject towards a major sequence.

For further information, consult Professor Bernard Rechter, acting director of the Centre for Jewish Civilisation in the Department of History.
