Prerequisites: First-year Japanese language, Japanese studies, economics, or
management related disciplines or the prior permission of the instructor
Objectives Students completing this subject should have an understanding of the fundamental institutions, major issues and contending perspectives on the Japanese `economic miracle', including its industrial policy, industrial relations, management practices, international finance, investment and trade.
Synopsis This subject introduces students to the contemporary Japanese political economy and to aspects of Japanese-style management. Major topics will include Japan's industrial policy and international trade, and case studies of international transfer of Japanese management practices. The `uniqueness' of Japanese management will be addressed by evaluating culturalist versus organisational viewpoints.
Assessment Written (2000 words): 30%
