Accelerated Japanese 1B/C: part 1

* Prerequisite: 10 months or more experience living in Japan, knowledge of 300 kanji and passing the placement test

Objectives Students successfully completing this subject should be able to produce more accurate sentences using correct particles and connectives, more appropriate verbs, etc.; recognise and write a further 400 kanji (in total 700); express their opinion on familiar topics and their feelings in daily situations; further improve kiego, read simple structured articles from newspapers and magazines; write a short essay and use a Japanese wordprocessor.

Synopsis This is the first part of a three-year course which is designed for students who possess a high degree of competence in spoken Japanese. The course aims to bring students close to semi-native competence both in spoken and written Japanese by providing accelerated training. Students are advised to enrol concurrently for JPS1070 (Sources of contemporary Japanese culture and society).

Assessment Mid-semester test (1 hour): 5%
* Final examinations (3.5 hours): 35%
* Japanese wordprocessing: 15%
* Speaking test: 10%
* Quizzes and assignments: 35%
