Major sequence
A major in Indonesian studies consists of the following subjects:
First year
ASN1010 and ASN1020 Introduction to Asian civilisations, parts 1 and 2
Second and third year
INS2010/INS3010 (Indonesian societies and cultures) plus a further
thirty-two points from offerings within the Department of Asian Languages and
Studies and selected courses from anthropology, geography, history, music,
politics and visual arts. Subjects from other departments available within an
Indonesian studies major include:
- ANY3230 Culture and conflict in Indonesia
- ANY3490 Society and culture in mainland Southeast Asia
- ANY3510 A comparative examination of cultures in South and Southeast Asia
- DTS2050/3050 Asian theatre: an introduction (proposed to be offered next
in 1998)
- GES2710/3710 Southeast Asia
- HSY2710/3710 The island world of Southeast Asia
- HSY3190 Indonesia: the struggle for democracy
- HSY2720/3720 Nationalism and revolution in Southeast Asia
- MUS2260/3260 Asian music: three great traditions
- MUS2480/3480 Performance studies: Indonesian gamelan
- MUS2830/3830 Music of Southeast Asia I: Indonesia
- PLT2750/3750 Gender in Asian politics
- PLT3930 Southeast Asian politics
- VSA3750 Indonesian and Southeast Asian film and television
Students
undertaking a major in Indonesian studies should undertake not less than
twenty-eight of the fifty-two points required for the major from courses
offered within the Department of Asian Languages and Studies.
