Prerequisites: ITA1080 or ITA2080 (ITA2100 pre-1997)
Objectives Students are expected to acquire skills in analysing Italian journalistic texts; develop the skills to evaluate a range of radio and TV broadcasts, both in terms of content and language use; develop an awareness of how language can be manipulated by the media to reach consent. The teaching and communication medium is Italian.
Synopsis The subject explores the development of Italian journalism in the light of the political events which followed the unification of Italy. The language of Italian media - specifically the press - is studied in detail as is its influence and contribution to the development of the Italian language. Politics, current affairs, sport and advertising languages are considered in detail. Textual analysis is emphasised.
Assessment Written (2000 words): 20%
