Objectives Students successfully completing this subject should have developed a knowledge of some of the new approaches involved in the recent historical literature on this period, a general understanding of some of the issues involved in thinking about the French and Industrial revolutions, nationalism, the modern state and about the concept of `modernity'. They should also have some understanding of gender in history.

Synopsis This subject will begin with a discussion of changing interpretations of the French and Industrial revolutions and their importance in the making of modern Europe. It will then explore a number of political and social developments: nationalism, liberalism, socialism and the making of modern states; the emergence of a class society, the importance of private and public spheres. Questions about gender in relation to citizenship, class and ideas of national identity will be discussed.
