Objectives Students will be expected to acquaint themselves with the considerable body of knowledge on the changes in the political, economic and social systems of the German states from 1918 to 1945, particularly focusing on National Socialism; develop a knowledge of, and reflect on, the changing historical interpretations of developments in German history from 1918 to 1945; and continue the acquisition of the critical and analytical skills necessary for the advanced study of history. In addition, third year students will be expected to develop a historical topic of their own to research and write.
Synopsis The subject examines the course of German history from 1918 to 1945, focussing on the development, policies, course and implications of the National Socialist dictatorship in Germany from 1933 to 1945. This includes the development and decline of the Weimar republic, intellectual origins and rise of National Socialism, the development, course and nature of Nationalist Socialist domination, National Socialist policies of extermination and genocide, support for and opposition to National Socialism, the impact and consequences of National Socialism for Germany and the world.
