Objectives Students successfully completing this subject should have developed an understanding of Australia's changing immigration and settlement policies; an understanding of the varieties of immigrant experience, and a grasp of key concepts employed by historians in the study of immigrants and their relations with the host society.
Synopsis Covering the period from 1788 to the present, the subject provides an overview of immigration and settlement policies, the immigrant experience, and the impact of immigration on national identity. Case studies examine the experience of five minority groups: the Irish, Jews, Italians, Greeks and Chinese. The final part considers the differing experiences of male and female immigrants.
