Objectives Upon successful completion of the subject students should have developed the ability to function in German in a range of different contexts and situation, which make demands on students' written and spoken ability to present and discuss a number of topics in German without major interruptions, making use of appropriate expressions and showing a willingness to interact; produce adequate pronunciation of German; display an acceptable command of German grammar; command a range of registers, correctly used in appropriate situations.
Synopsis Part 1: Spoken and written German at an advanced level in the beginners stream. Emphasis on the rapid extension of vocabulary and expansion of communicative competence in speech and writing. Part 2: Introduction to German linguistics. Introduction to the theory of language as applied to German.
Assessment Written (1200 words): 30%
* Examinations (3 hours): 70%
