Objectives To introduce students to Marx's interpretation of history, Nietzsche's interpretation of morality and Freud's theory of civilisation; to facilitate students' critical understanding and questioning through a detailed examination of the set texts with special attention to the techniques of close reading; to provide students with an understanding of concepts and conceptual systems together with the historical knowledge necessary to grasp the premises, structure and implications of these theories; students will be required to demonstrate expository and analytic skills in a class presentation and a commentary and the capacity to develop and articulate in an essay their own position in relation to the texts studied.
Synopsis Selected writings of Heinrich Heine, Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche and Sigmund Freud.
Assessment Written (4000 words): 70%
* Examinations (1 hour): 30%
