Prerequisites: A first-year sequence in geography, or permission of the head of
department
Objectives This subject sets out to provide students with a set of skills relating to research methodology; observational and measurement techniques; data compilation; analytical methods; and interpretive and critical report writing.
Synopsis The subject will focus on concepts including the nature of geographical and environmental data; samples and sampling; descriptive statistics; comparative statistics; relationships and trends; and spatial statistics. Throughout the subject students will make use of computer spreadsheets; word processing; and geographical information system (GIS) applications for the analysis and presentation of data.
Assessment Written (1500 words): 40%

* Practical work: 30%
