Logic and language A

* Prerequisites: PHL2170 and third-year subject in logic or philosophy of language (refer to the Arts undergraduate handbook)

Objectives Students successfully completing this paper will have a thorough grasp of a number of issues within recent logic, philosophy of language, and semantics. They will have a clear understanding of the workings of a number of formal systems, and of their application to ordinary language; and should find themselves in a position to propose and evaluate analyses for themselves.

Synopsis This is a foundational subject in philosophical logic and philosophy of language. It offers, primarily, an introduction to major recent work in the area. A reading list may be obtained from the department.

Assessment Written (6000 words): 100%
* Option of 3000-word essay and 3-hour examination
