Objectives By the end of the semester, students undertaking this course should have acquired a wide critical reading knowledge of the literature; an understanding of approaches in Australian, European, American and Asian ethnomusicology; an ability for coherent argument; and a confidence in applying various ethnomusicological techniques to a wide range of topics of music.
Synopsis A discussion of (i) the theories of major historical musicologists dating mainly from the late nineteenth century to the present and (ii) the theory of ethnomusicology, covering works of major ethnomusicologists from the late nineteenth century to the present.
Assessment (8 points) Essay (4000 words): 50%
