Objectives By the end of the semester, students undertaking this unit should have gained experience in the performance of selected repertoire from a wide range of periods at a professional standard, performed music from solo and chamber repertoire establishing artistic links between pieces, and undertaken the performance of the set work common to all students presenting for assessment on the same instrument.

Synopsis Guided by supervisors, the student will choose and submit a unified program of works to be studied and performed, with an essay containing a fully developed justification of the program, and a discussion of the performance practice, analysis and history of the repertoire. Students will receive an individual lesson each week on their chosen instrument or voice or a group lesson in the case of conducting; and will attend masterclasses as prescribed, the nature of which will be determined by the selection of chief practical study enrolments. Each student will arrange and present a solo lecture-demonstration open to the public and write a program booklet for distribution at the lecture-demonstration. Programs should be of approximately an hour in length and will be presented before a team of examiners. On completion of the subject the student should have developed technical skills and experience in musical performance and have broadened their knowledge and understanding of the repertoire.

Assessment Essay (2000 words): 15%
* 60-minute lecture/demonstration and program booklet (2000 words): 85%
