Objectives By the end of the semester, students undertaking this unit should have a practical knowledge of a variety of issues in the musical traditions of Sub-Saharan Africa, including history, musical styles, the socio/cultural function of different performance genres, and musical instruments.

Synopsis The unit deals with musical, aesthetic, social and ritual concepts and practices as expressed in the musical life of Sub-Saharan African cultures, with particular reference to selected performances of music and dance, the relationships between music and the related arts, and the topology of musical instruments in Sub-Saharan Africa.

* Assignments: 15%
