Objectives On successful completion of the unit, students should have an understanding of the growth and development of musical forms seen as an outcome of cultural change as well as a number of methods of analytical inquiry which can be applied specifically to chamber forms.
Synopsis Major chamber works from the Middle Ages to the present are studied from both historical and analytical points of view. An early issue covered includes the development of the sonata form, seen as the result of adapted vocal forms influenced by dance music. Questions such as the propriety of the modern concert hall for the presentation of the intimate chamber music model; the social origins of chamber music; and performance modes - amateur or professional - are considered.
