Objectives By the end of the semester, students undertaking this unit should have gained an introduction to baton technique for conducting in a wide variety of instrumental and vocal ensembles and an introduction to score preparation, with attention paid to performance practice. They will also have constructed a foundation for generating an aural concept of a musical work.

Synopsis In this self-directed subject, students are required to propose a program of works to be arranged and/or conducted for performance by a band, orchestra, choir or other approved ensemble, discuss the arrangements, and develop approaches to interpretation and refine baton techniques, after which they may present the program in public performance. Students must submit detailed reviews of the works for distribution at the performance, showing a knowledge of the related repertoire. Orchestral and band conductors will work with an established band on specified works.

Assessment Written (3500 words): 30%
