Prerequisites: Education in a Chinese educational system, ability to speak a
Chinese dialect
Objectives Students must complete both parts 1 and 2 (CHI4480) in order to develop: 1. the ability to speak Mandarin fluently and accurately, 2. the ability to transcribe Chinese characters in pinyin, 3. the oral/aural ability for formal and informal modes of communication across a range of social and business contexts, 4. the ability to write formal correspondence using appropriate business vocabulary, 5. a knowledge of mainland Chinese business practices.
Synopsis (1) Mandarin phonetics and phonology; (2) the pinyin romanisation system; (3) the simplified character system
Assessmentweekly oral, aural, written exercises (including laboratory
work): 40%
* Oralexamination: 30%
* Written examination(2 hours): 30%
