Prerequisites: A credit in CHI4320/5320 or equivalent
Objectives The subject aims to provide students with knowledge that should enhance their understanding of contemporary China; the ability to comprehend and express complex ideas in both spoken and written forms, consolidating in this regard, skills already acquired at the advanced intermediate level; strategies of cross-cultural conceptualisation, incorporating translation skills, crucial to critical thinking on a range of contemporary issues concerning China. Translation and reading exercises developed for this part of the course are based primarily on texts in standard Chinese from the People's Republic of China.
Synopsis Reading of original modern texts, introduction to classical Chinese, and advanced spoken Chinese.
Assessment Two Written assignments (1000 words each): 20%
