Objectives Students should become fluent in both spoken and written skills for everyday purposes and should develop awareness of differences between formal and informal modes of communication. Knowledge of Chinese history and culture acquired in language classes would be consolidated through field trip participation.

Synopsis Students will enrol in this subject to have their results accredited to their degree at `Advanced intermediate Chinese' level. Students will select Mandarin Level III at the Nanjing Normal University, China. Emphasis is placed on the acquisition and use of a wider vocabulary through the study of text and language tapes. Important topics of Chinese literature and culture are explored and students are expected to deal with more complex issues and aspects of stylistics and contemporary usage of Mandarin. In addition, students are required to take part in programmed cultural interaction and to participate in regular fieldtrips (there is a half-day or a full-day excursion most weekends) designed to introduce students to some aspect of Chinese society, history and culture. Where possible, such fieldtrips will involve students in language practice. All students in China school will receive an outline of the fieldtrips prior departure and they are asked to schedule any other travel plans outside of these times if possible.

Assessment Examination (written and oral) 3 hours: 90%
* Class performance (undertaken in China): 10%
* NB Granting of accreditation to a Monash degree is dependant upon passing an exam at Monash University in the Department of Asian Languages and Studies on return to Australia. Students must contact G Davies, 9905 2234 to make the necessary arrangements to sit the exam.
