The principal objective of this degree is to introduce a basic knowledge of the broad region known as Asia and one of its languages, or to add to that knowledge. On completion of the degree a student should have a general knowledge of the three regions, East Asia, South Asia and Southeast Asia, and their relationships with each other and Australia at the present time, together with a basic knowledge of one of the Asian languages, and a closer familiarity with the country of that language and its immediate region.
