Objectives On the successful completion of this subject, students should have developed a coherent view of literacy as an alternative to the prevalent narrowly technical view of reading and writing. Students will be familiar with notions of genre and register and have an understanding of children's writing and reading development, and of the relevant pedagogical approaches, and have developed skills in responding to children's texts.

Synopsis The subject focuses on issues of literacy and the learning of English as a mother tongue. We consider the nature of linguistic competence and its implications for judgements about literacy standards, the place of grammar in English teaching, and the socio-cultural constructions for English speakers. Approaches to the teaching of reading, writing and speakingwill be examined; also the value of linguistic analysis in the understanding of both literary and non-literary texts, the interpretation of students' writing problems, classroom research and the assessment of students' linguistic performance.

Assessment Research Project (5000 words): 60%
