Objectives After completion of this course, students are expected to have acquired a grasp of concepts appropriate to the understanding of Japan through an understanding of its cultural traditions; to have developed some sensitivity to the existence of a Eurocentric view through a critique of Orientalism; and to demonstrate an awareness of the ideological bias inherent in cultural studies.
Synopsis This course offers a broad perspective of Japanese cultural and artistic forms, treating the verbal, visual and performing arts in their traditional and contemporary manifestations. The relations between the arts and society in various periods will be a unifying focus.
