Objectives Students should develop an understanding of some of the major theoretical approaches and topics associated with Japanese sociolinguistics.
Synopsis An advanced introduction to the discipline of sociolinguistics in its application to the study of Japanese and English usage in contact situations. Special emphasis will be on the issue of the relationship between language and society, language problems, and methods and techniques of inquiry.
