* Prerequisite: HBM5101, HBM5102, HBM5204 and HBM5203, or equivalents

Objectives On completion of this subject students should be able to identify the issues surrounding a bioethical topic of their choice; think critically about those issues; articulate and defend the line ethical reasoning or argument on this topic and write a substantially self-directed piece of original research in bioethics.

Synopsis This subject requires students to complete a substantial and original supervised research paper on a bioethical topic of their own choice. In the paper, students are required to articulate and defend a line of ethical reasoning or argument on their chosen topic. While not a general requirement, some topics may allow scope for a limited amount of original empirical research. Students will be allocated a supervisor on the basis of their research proposal, and should meet with their supervisor on a regular basis throughout both semesters. As the research paper is self-directed, students are strongly advised to begin work on it as soon as their research proposal is accepted. Students will also have the opportunity to present their research-in-progress to other members of the group on a fortnightly basis throughout both semesters.

Assessment Written (20,000 words): 100%
