A candidate wishing to undertake the research degree must, except in special circumstances, hold the honours degree of Bachelor of Arts with at least second class honours in history or the equivalent. The research degree can be taken by submission of a thesis, 40,000-60,000 words in length, on an approved research topic. The work for this will be supervised and pursued over such period as faculty regulations permit: normally up to three years full-time, and a period not exceeding five years for part-time study.
