Objectives On successful completion of this subject students should have developed an advanced knowledge of German literature and culture in the first part of the modern period, and a comprehensive understanding of the social, political and historical contexts in which this literature is located.
Synopsis A comprehensive cross-section of the prose, poetry and drama of German language cultures between the beginnings of modernism and the end of the Second World War. Additional emphasis will be placed on cultural history (periodicals, connections with other art forms and philosophy) and the sociohistorical background of this period.
