European cultural history: the Spanish Civil War

Objectives Students completing this subject should have acquired an understanding of and a multidisciplinary perspective on a key political and cultural event of the 1930s, and an awareness of the impact of international ideologies on national issues.
Synopsis This subject aims to familiarise students with the origins of the war in earlier Spanish history, the ideologies of the European background against which it unfolded and its broad impact on the intellectual life and artistic production of the 1930s and beyond. The subject will involve the reading of historical and literary selections as well as the study of visual material - posters, painting and film. The film for special study will be Saura's Cousin Angelica. Other films on, or related to, the Spanish Civil War will be shown at lunchtime during the semester.

additional primary material and the preparation of an extensive bibliography
