Objectives At the conclusion of the subject, students should be able to identify the leading ideas in the theoretical contribution of the theorist concerned; explain the contribution of this thinker to the social sciences; assess the development of the theory in the life of theorist by reference to its leading ideas and by reference to specific texts; show an awareness for the critical issues which have been central in the assessment of this theorist's contribution to the sociological discipline and the social sciences; articulate an interpretation of the current standing of the theory in the development of social theory.
Synopsis This subject is an in-depth analysis of one social theorist (Talcott Parsons: 1997), and the theory for which this person has become well known. The subject investigates the relevant biographical, historical and cultural situation in which the theorist is/was located. By a careful examination of the writer's written and published contributions, with an in-depth analysis of some key texts, the theory is analysed, explored, applied and evaluated. Of special concern will be the variant readings of the theory and the way in which the theoretical insight has been worked out in the practise of social research.
