Objectives At the completion of this subject students should have acquired a knowledge of the materials and technology of book production, have had experience in printing by hand, and have become familiar with the more important bibliographies and catalogues of books printed before 1801.
Synopsis This subject is a study of (a) the changing technologies of book production in the Western tradition from the fifteenth century onwards and (b) the bibliographical control of incunabula and other pre-1801 printed books. Students will be required to hand-set a short text and print it on a flat-bed press.
