Society, culture and the study of Australia.

Objectives Upon completion, students will be expected to have gained a sense of the historical and cultural context for the study of Australia and to have become familiar with the concept of Australian Studies. Having gained an appreciation of the historical factors conditioning and inhibiting the articulation of Australian cultural concerns, students will be expected to have developed an understanding of the approaches of a range of disciplines to the interpretation of Australian society and culture in the period since the Second World War. Students will further be expected to have gained a critical understanding of the intellectual climate which has influenced the emergence of Australian studies.

Synopsis Contemporary in focus, the subject surveys the period since the Second World War and articulates the central themes of dependence, growth and identity. The role of institutions such as the mass media, cultural agencies and the universities is examined, and the response of disciplines such as literature, history, fine arts and anthropology to the study of Australia analysed.

Assessment (8 points) Two seminar papers (1500 words): 25% each
* Long essay (4000 words): 50%

* Long essay (6000 words): 50%
