Master of Arts in Spanish

Objectives

Students successfully completing the Master of Arts in Spanish by coursework and thesis should have gained greater understanding of a special field in Spanish studies and of a related topic in another discipline as a preparation for the advanced research work incorporated in the thesis itself.

The minimum requirement for entry to the MA program (forty-eight points, one year full-time or normally two years part-time) is an honours degree with a grade of H2A or better in Spanish or its equivalent. Students must (i) draw up a critical bibliography in preparation for the thesis; (ii) write a thesis of approximately 40,000-60,000 words.

Suitably qualified candidates may be granted permission proceed to the degree by coursework and thesis. The program will be as follows:

(i) SPM5960.08 Special Spanish reading course;

(ii) One approved eight-point MA part II subject offered by the Department of Romance Languages or by another department or centre in the Faculty of Arts;

(iii) thesis (66%) of 25-35,000 words. Some instruction in reference bibliography will be provided as a preparation for the thesis.

Candidates are invited to discuss further combined programs with the head of section.
